Current rains throughout most of Minnesota have been a welcome sight.

Nonetheless, is it sufficient for sufficient soil moisture recharge? That’s the million-dollar query.

The U.S. Drought Monitor report map launched July 1 reveals the entire state of Minnesota in drought, starting from abnormally dry within the northeast to extreme drought alongside the southern counties. Many of the state is in reasonable drought.

Mark Seeley, College of Minnesota Extension climatology professor emeritus, says he’s involved concerning the lack of moisture in western areas of the state.

“Lamberton, in Redwood County, is at 0.34 inches for the month so far, a record dry June there,” he says.

1 inch of moisture per week

This time within the rising season, crops want about 1 inch of moisture per week to keep up with their every day transpiration and progress necessities, he says.

“To improve on the Drought Monitor categories, we need to see more than 1 inch per week of rain — more like 1.5 inches per week for a few weeks,” he provides.

Grass pastures have been beneath stress longer with the drought, in comparison with different crops. Thom Petersen, Minnesota agricultural commissioner, says state ag officials are monitoring circumstances carefully.

“We’re watching haying and grazing opportunities, such as grazing RIM [Reinvest in Minnesota] and DNR [Department of Natural Resources] farmland,” Petersen says. “We are also talking with federal government [officials] and FSA [the Farm Service Agency] about opening up grazing.”

Main nesting seasons ends in Minnesota on Aug. 1, so presently (as of July 1), emergency haying and grazing CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) land will not be but permitted. Round 30 counties are eligible since they’ve been rated on the D2 stage drought for a minimum of one week.

Petersen says the Minnesota Division of Agriculture is assembly each different week with farm teams and state and federal company officials to remain on prime of the drought state of affairs.
