Qualifying land homeowners who signal a land conservation settlement that protects grasslands through the project can be ready to generate extra income through carbon offsets.
Funding has been supplied through the AgriAssurance Program beneath the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, with business funding from Shell Canada. The project can be led by CFGA and is supported by a various group of companions, that can contribute information and in-kind sources.
Throughout the project, a carbon offset protocol can be examined and refined, with the aim to perceive the challenges and alternatives related to an prevented conversion of grasslands program. Carbon offset protocols exist in some jurisdictions that acknowledge the local weather advantages related to avoiding soil tillage, or altering livestock feed to cut back greenhouse fuel emissions, produced through digestion.
“This new protocol recognizes the significant contributions made by the ranching community when they choose to conserve grasslands at risk of conversion to crop production or other forms of development that significantly disturb the soil,” says Cedric MacLeod, govt director of CFGA. “Although it’s early days, the initiative could play an important role in protecting grasslands in Canada by compensating landowners for responsible stewardship of the land.”
