USask meat science professor to be honoured with industry and organization leadership award

The American Meat Science Affiliation (AMSA) has introduced Dr. Phyllis Shand because the 2021 AMSA Industry & Organizational Leadership Award recipient.

Shand is a professor of meat and meals science within the division of meals and bioproduct sciences on the College of Saskatchewan whose analysis program focuses on physicochemical, biochemical, and purposeful features of muscle proteins. Shand is an internationally recognized and revered meat scientist, with a variety of specialties, together with contemporary meat high quality, to additional processing and novel elements.

The AMSA Industry & Organizational Leadership Award was established to acknowledge those that have demonstrated excellent leadership in an space associated to the meat industry. The award is sponsored by Smithfield Meals, Inc.

“She has been a champion of the Canadian meat industry, developing relationships with agricultural groups, industry, institutions, people, and companies to address challenges and facilitate solutions. Her innovative applied research has benefited companies manufacturing processed products” says Dr. Elizabeth Boyle, professor and extension meat science specialist at Kansas State College.

Shand will be honoured in the course of the 74th AMSA Reciprocal Meat Convention (RMC) awards presentation August 17, 2021, in Reno, Nevada, hosted by the College of Nevada – Reno.

Dr. Shand says she is “most proud of the students and junior faculty that I have mentored and of the industry research collaborations and training I’ve provided.”
